A portal to the mountain kingdom

As hotel hosts in a national park, the Spidsberg family is committed to taking care of their surroundings. One way of doing so is investing in quality Norwegian furniture from Ekornes.

Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane is located in one of the most beautiful areas in all of Norway. Venabygdsfjellet lies close to the national park which has inspired both artists, writers and not least hikers for centuries. The most famous is perhaps Henrik Ibsen, who set much of the action in Peer Gynt (1867) here.

What is today a modern resort was built as a mountain pasture in 1919, by Hans Spidsberg. Not long after, the first hikers were welcomed to six guest beds. Today's hotel director Sindre Spidsberg and his wife Elise are the fourth generation here, and they have ambitious goals for Spidsbergseter.

- It is no longer enough to open the doors and expect people to want to come here solely because of the beautiful surroundings. The hotel must be a destination within the destination - in other words, a resort. We have a wide variety of visitors throughout the year, and have to offer a lot of different activities. That's why we always have a new project underway, says Sindre Spidsberg.

Not a single chair discarded in five years

Spidsbergseter Resort now includes, among other attractions, a large wellness center, restaurants, its own bakery, and a collection of 140 varieties of aquavit stored in the "Aquavit barn". Guests enjoy activities such as dog sledding, cross-country skiing, horse riding and fishing. As hosts in a national park, the family is concerned with traditions, sustainability and Norwegian quality. For the past 17 years, they have furnished the hotel with furniture from Ekornes.

- We have beds from Svane in all rooms, and we get very good feedback on them. But what impresses most people are perhaps the restaurant chairs. Today we have around 100 Stressless® Dining chairs, and I have to say they have been excellent. Comfort is, of course, the most important aspect, but I also appreciate the fact that if a chair gets damaged, we can easily replace the parts. We haven't discarded a chair since 2018, when these came into place.

- Tell us a little bit about how you work with sustainability.

- To the extent possible, we prefer to source products locally. That way, we have better quality control and know their origin. Currently, we are also converting a significant portion of our heating to biofuel. Heating a high-mountain resort requires a substantial amount of kilowatts! We are also focused on reducing consumption and discouraging a throwaway mentality. We would rather invest extra in durable furniture that can withstand heavy use than buying cheap and disposing of it frequently.

In the common areas, Spidsbergseter also has Stressless® sofas, which have gone through heavy wear from guests in hiking clothes and ski boots. They have really withstood the test of time, says the hotel director.

- We bought them around 17 years ago. The fabric is still taut, and not worn or pilled. That’s impressive, says Sindre Spidsbergseter.
